Chemical Peel

Chemical Peel Treatment

A medical-grade chemical peel is a simple, effective and fuss-free way of renewing the skin at it’s top layers. It can be used to treat acne by unclogging pores, target uneven skin texture, and address epidermal pigment concerns. By gently removing layers of the skin, a chemical peel stimulates renewal, revealing a smoother and brighter surface beneath.

The difference between a medical-grade chemical peel and a home-based peel is that a medical-grade peel often contains a higher concentration of acids, and is performed by a trained medical staff in a clinic setting. This allows us to vary the concentration, contact time and number of coats of the chemical peels to be tailored to your unique skin needs.

This ensures that every chemical peel is performed with medical precision and aesthetic attention. Whether you are seeking a subtle glow or deeper correction for stubborn skin issues, our clinic provides safe and proven solutions in a supportive environment.

What Is a Chemical Peel Treatment

A chemical peel is a dermatological procedure that uses a medical-grade solution to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin. The treatment encourages controlled shedding, which clears away surface imperfections and stimulates new cell growth. This natural renewal process improves skin texture, tone, and overall clarity.

Chemical peels are not one-size-fits-all. They range from gentle superficial peels that target dullness and fine surface concerns, to medium and deep chemical peels that treat pigmentation, scarring, and more advanced signs of ageing.

At Lumine Dermatology, we offer the following chemical peels to match your skin type and goals.

  • Mandelic acid 40%: This is an alpha-hydroxyacid peel that gradually and gently penetrates the skin, leaving minimal redness and peeling. It simulates collagen and proteoglycan synthesis, encourages cellular renewal and allows for more gentle and gradual exfoliation. This makes it a suitable peel for those who have sensitive skin.

Common indications for mandelic acid 40% peel include acne, hyperpigmentation or even those looking for a quick glow up before an important event. In addition, as topical mandelic acid has minimal systemic absorption, it is generally considered safe in pregnancy. Hence, it can be used to benefit pregnant ladies who may suffer from acne, hyperpigmentation, seborrhoea and dull skin.

  • Jessner’s peel: Jessner’s peel is a combination of lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol. Hydroquinone and kojic acid can be added to this chemical peel depending on your skin’s needs, especially if hyperpigmentation is a concern. Like other medium depth peels, Jessner’s chemical solution removes the outermost layer of the skin, and triggers an inflammatory response from the superficial dermis.

This inflammatory process triggers a self-healing response in our body that leads to minimizing hyperpigmentation, evening out skin tone and softening fine lines and wrinkles. It is a versatile peel for individuals looking to improve multiple aspects of their skin, without the down-time of a deep peel.

Skin Concerns That Chemical Peels Address

Acne and Acne Scars

Pitted Acne Scars

Many patients turn to chemical peels to manage acne especially post-inflammatory erythema and hyperpigmentation. Chemical peels like the mandelic acid peel also controls seborrhoea (excessive oil production), unclogs pores, and helps prevent future breakouts. By encouraging skin renewal, they also lighten post-acne marks and encourage a smoother skin texture. When combined with a wider acne treatment plan, chemical peels provide lasting benefits with minimal downtime.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure, hormonal changes, or conditions such as superficial melasma often respond to chemical peels. By targeting excess melanin in the skin, peels gradually reduce dark spots and create a more even skin tone. With regular treatments, patients notice significant improvements in clarity and brightness.

Fine Lines, Dullness, and Rough Texture

As skin ages, cell turnover slows, leaving the surface looking tired and uneven. A chemical peel removes the build-up of dead skin cells, softens fine lines, and leads to an overall improvement in skin texture and skin tone. This contributes to improved skin health and improved radiance.

Types of Chemical Peels

Superficial Peels, Medium-Depth & Deep peels Comparation

Superficial Peels (e.g Mandelic acid 40 %- Enerpeel)

Superficial peels are gentle treatments designed to freshen the surface of the skin. They work on the uppermost layer, where dead skin cells often build up and make the complexion appear tired or uneven. By carefully exfoliating this layer, peels bring back a natural glow and leave the skin smoother to the touch. These peels are ideal for patients who want to brighten dull skin, soften early pigmentation, or control seborrhoea without taking time away from daily commitments.

Medium-Depth Peels (e.g Jessner’s peel)

Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin, making them suitable for treating hyperpigmentation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or erythema associated with acne scars, or those with fine lines and wrinkles. Patients usually experience a few days of visible peeling as the skin renews itself. The results are more dramatic than superficial peels, and they often form part of a structured treatment plan, which can be combined with lasers or skin boosters.

Deep Peels

Deep chemical peels are reserved for more severe conditions, such as advanced sun damage or deeper wrinkles. They reach the lower layers of skin and produce significant results, but they also require longer downtime and careful supervision. These are considered only when appropriate, and patients are closely monitored to ensure safe healing.

What to Expect During Chemical Peel Treatment

Every chemical peel begins with a thorough consultation. Our dermatologist reviews your skin type, medical history, and treatment goals. This ensures the chemical peel selected is safe, effective, and customised for your unique needs.

On the day of the procedure, your skin will be cleansed and prepared. The chemical peel solution is then applied to the skin for a specific period. You may feel tingling, mild stinging, or warmth during the process, which subsides quickly once the peel is neutralised. After the peel, calming products and a sheet mask is applied to soothe and protect the skin.

The session typically lasts less than an hour, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule. While lighter peels allow you to resume normal activities immediately, deeper peels may require some downtime.

Precautions before a Chemical Peel

Prior to a chemical peel, the following precautions need to be observed:

  1. Inform your dermatologist if you are taking isotretinoin for acne or have a history of cold sores
  2. Ensure that you do not have a suntan or sunburn at the time of the chemical peel
  3. Avoid physical exfoliation 7 days prior to the chemical peel
  4. Avoid applying the following topicals 3-7 days prior to the chemical peel, do inform us if in doubt: Retinols, Adapalene, Tretinoin, Trifarotene, AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid)
  5. Inform us if you have received any prior aesthetic procedures e.g botulinum toxin injections, filler treatments, laser procedures or skin boosters

Recovery and Aftercare

Chemical Peel

After a superficial peel, most patients experience no to mild rednessfor several days. In some instances, there may be mild peeling that usually resolves within a week. The skin often appears fresher and brighter immediately after.

Medium-depth peels may cause noticeable redness and peeling that lasts up to a week. Deeper peels require a more extended recovery period.

Aftercare is vital to protect your results. Sun protection is essential, as the skin is more sensitive to UV exposure after a chemical peel. Moisturising helps the healing process, while harsh skincare products or exfoliants should be avoided until the skin recovers. At Lumine Dermatology, every patient receives personalised aftercare instructions to support safe and effective healing.

We also schedule follow-up reviews where needed to monitor progress and recommend maintenance treatments. This ongoing care ensures you achieve the best results while keeping your skin healthy in the long term.

Benefits of a Chemical Peel

Even after a single session of chemical peel, many patients notice a smoother texture, improvement in seborrhoea and a brighter glow. With repeated treatments, improvements in pigmentation, acne,  acne scars, and fine lines become more pronounced.

Chemical peels are versatile. They can be used to treat multiple skin concerns at once, making them an efficient choice for those looking to enhance overall skin quality. From teenagers struggling with acne to adults seeking rejuvenation, peels offer benefits across a wide range of ages and concerns.

Unlike some treatments that focus only on surface-level results, chemical peels stimulate renewal from within. This means healthier skin function and better long-term outcomes when combined with good skincare habits and sun protection.

Suitability and Safety

Chemical peels are safe for most patients when performed by an experienced dermatologist. They can be tailored for different skin types, tones, and concerns. However, some individuals may not be suitable, including those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or currently using certain medications.

For acne, chemical peels may also initially cause a purging reaction as the peel unclogs the pores and encourages the clogged contents to come to the surface of the skin.

A thorough consultation is always the first step. At Lumine Dermatology, we evaluate each patient carefully before recommending a peel. If another treatment, such as laser therapy or extractions, is more appropriate, we will provide guidance to help you make the right choice.
